Album review: Whiplash – The Soundtrack

Now, I don’t tend to review albums that have been out more than a few months, but I have to make an exception for this masterpiece. I’m a bit embarrassed but I have to say I hadn’t heard of this movie before yesterday. For some random reason, the Caravan scene from the movie popped up in my recommended feed on YouTube, so just out of curiosity, I watched it. It’s 9 minutes of absolute musical perfection. In fact, the entire is musical perfection. At first glance, it might just seem like a couple ordinary jazz arrangements but believe me, when you focus on the drumming, it is on another level. Although I’m pretty sure the actor didn’t actually perform Caravan multiple times (The piece is 9 minutes long and insanely hard), it’s just absolutely stunning. My only gripe with this soundtrack in fact, is the filler. There are one or two tracks that don’t really add anything to the soundtrack, like the sound clips of quotes from the movie. But nonetheless, the actual jazz tracks stand out to me as some of the best I’ve ever heard, and because of that, I’m definitely going to watch the movie and buy the soundtrack on vinyl.

Rating: 9/10
